About Lighthouse Youth Services
Every night, more than 200 young people are homeless in Cincinnati. Credible data sources, which measure the extent of youth homelessness but vary in definition of homelessness, indicate up to 4,500 youth are homeless each year in Cincinnati. Since 1975, Lighthouse Youth Services has essentially served as the homeless youth system of care for young people in Hamilton County. Lighthouse is a nationally recognized leader in its work with homeless youth. The agency has developed a system of care for homeless youth which includes street outreach, the Sheakley Center for Youth (shelter for 18-24 year olds), the Youth Crisis Center (shelter for youth under the age of 18), a Resource Center, and Youth Housing Services( apartments and life skills training for older youth transitioning to self-sufficiency), and family reunification services. In 2013, Lighthouse announced that its number one strategic priority is to end youth homelessness in Cincinnati by 2020. Ending youth homelessness means that by 2020, any young person alone and on the streets of Cincinnati will have shelter. And by 2020, any youth in shelter in Cincinnati will be able to leave that shelter with a plan for self-sufficiency and the support to provide the youth with a safe place to live. Lighthouse is leading the collaborative initiative to end youth homelessness in our community. This has included a community wide research and planning effort to examine the scope of youth homelessness in our community, who is at highest risk, and best practices in preventing youth homelessness and best practices in supporting homeless youth toward self-sufficiency and stable housing. This has led to developing practices and interventions to both prevent and intervene with youth at risk or who are homeless. Another piece of the plan is a four story 65,000 square foot housing and service complex currently under construction in Walnut Hills. The building on Iowa Avenue will include 28 individual shelter bedrooms, 39 apartments, a resource center, health care facilities, and a street outreach team. Construction is expected to be completed in December 2017. About Lighthouse Youth Services Lighthouse Youth Services is dedicated to providing the best services and compassionate care to children, youth and families in need. Founded in 1969, Lighthouse now serves 6000 children, youth and families each year. In addition, Lighthouse provides housing options for young adults learning to become self-sufficient. Lighthouse is the largest provider of foster care in Hamilton County.
