About Individualized Transition Skills Program
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." -Chinese Proverb THIS IS WHY we wake up everyday; to see their courage, successes, hopes, dreams, and the chance to help foster youth reach their goals. We teach independent living skills to over 500 foster youth a year who are aging-out of the system without a strong safety net. There are thousands more who need our support. These children didn't ask for their circumstances and they can't do it alone. We need your help. This is Why: -25% of the nation's 20,000 foster youth annually "age out" of the foster care system and end up homeless within one year. -Without life skills, many former foster youth join the ranks of the homeless and unemployed. -Disproportionate numbers of foster youth give up hope and commit suicide. -65% leave foster care without a place to live, and 27% of the current homeless population spent time in foster care. -The average foster youth will have moved nine times before high school graduation. -Only 42% are likely to graduate from high school. -One-third of foster youth experienced extreme poverty in the four years after leaving care. -Foster youth are far more vulnerable to being a victim of sex trafficking. -Young women in the foster system have a 50% chance of being pregnant by age 19. -Less than 3% of youth in foster care attend a 4-year college. -LGBT youth are at an even greater risk for negative outcomes. Pretty dismal stuff, right? The good news is that Teach us to Fish is making a real difference and working to provide better and brighter futures for youth in foster care. What is Teach Us to Fish? Our program promotes the self-sufficiency of foster youth. We work with youth ages 16-21 years-old and provide them with one-on-one coaching in their home and communities for up to two years. Often their mentor is the only person in their lives who encourages them to keep going when they stumble and is the first to hear about their college acceptance letter, or their new job. We are there to help foster youth develop life skills and goals, such as graduating high school, going to college, getting a job, and securing a safe home. We also work with them to recognize healthy relationships and protect themselves from unplanned pregnancy and high-risk situations. How Your Donation Will Help: -School supply kits and hygiene kits. -Grocery store cards, so our coaches can teach youth how to shop for groceries on a budget and create a healthy meal together. -Funds for appropriate interview attire. -Extended time in our program for those who need more support. -Group outings to job fairs, college tours and connections with nature. "I've lived in LA my whole life and this is the first time I've seen the ocean." -Destinee Your Impact Making a difference in the life of someone else actually HELPS you, and makes your own life better and more fulfilling. Two birds, one stone. How great is that?! Open a newspaper or turn on the news and you’re bound to be inundated with seemingly hopeless world problems that need solving. You can make a difference by helping us produce tangible and measurable results in the lives of foster youth. Our curriculum has been developed for over 10 years and is tailored to the success of each youth. Over the last 6 years we measured our program's results and were proud to find: -85% of our youth beat the odds and graduate from high school. -68% go to college. -75% of youth who are able to work find employment. -84% increase their self-advocacy skills. -88% have a deeper understanding of emotional well-being and healthy relationships. -100% of the youth in our program learn to access supportive community resources. -97% youth demonstrate increased knowledge of safety skills (substance abuse prevention, parenting skills, and pregnancy prevention). -85% of youth demonstrate an increase in knowledge of housing programs. With your support, we are better able to provide opportunities, education and support to ensure better outcomes – and better LIVES – for youth in foster care. Other Ways You Can Help Just because you can't contribute, doesn't mean that you can't help: Spread the word: Whether or not you can contribute at this time, we would be tremendously grateful for any connections to your network—by email, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. Also, if you know any employers (in digital marketing or beyond) who might be interested in collaborating, we’d love to talk!
