About Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project
The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project is a nonpartisan, community-based, all-volunteer national initiative whose mission is to raise awareness through academic research and public information of Filipino and Filipino-American WWII Soldiers across the United States and Philippines for their wartime service to the U.S. and the Philippines from July 1941 to December 1946. On November 30, 2016, the United States Congress passed the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015 (S.1555). Subsequently, on December 14, 2016, S.1555 was signed into law by Pres. Obama. This historic event in American history is the culmination of 75 years of effort by many to recognize the Filipino Veterans for their courageous and selfless service in defending the United States and the Philippines from July 26, 1941 to December 31, 1946. Over 260,000 soldiers fought alongside American soldiers under the U.S. Army Forces Far East commanded by General Douglas MacArthur. Some 60,000 of these soldiers died in combat, and thousands more were wounded for life or are still missing in action. The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP), headed by Major General Antonio M. Taguba, U.S. Army Retired, led the congressional effort. FilVetREP is an IRS approved 501(3)(c) nonprofit, community-based, public charity formed to secure a Congressional Gold Medal for the Filipino veterans of World War II and raise national awareness of their crucial contribution to the United States World War II efforts through academic research and public education. Along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal is the nation’s highest civilian award bestowed to individuals or groups who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient’s field long after the achievement. Two of the major priorities of the FilVeTREP Congressional Gold Medal Project are to 1) fund the purchase of bronze replicas of the Congressional Gold Medal to present to the living veterans and surviving family members; and 2) develop an education program to memorialize the legacy of the Filipino soldiers’ heroism and contribution to America’s history.
