About Alyssa's Breath
This is the story of Alyssa's Breath, Named after the daughter of my best friend, Alyssa was in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 17 and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. She was in a coma for several months, had tracheostomy and has been in a wheelchair ever since. That was 24 years ago. She has been inpatient and outpatient over the years at several facilities and for the last 20 years has lived in a group home. Our story however does not focus only on Alyssa. Millions of individuals have been affected by a brain injury and a statistic showing 1 out of every 10 people will be affected is very real and sometimes difficult to comprehend or to even want to think about. Sadly, brain injury is known as THE SILENT EPIDEMIC. Not all brain injured people look "disabled" or their disability is very apparent and still no one wants to talk about it. It's just easier to walk away. I think the most difficult experiences for both the person injured and their families is the WAITING!!! WAITING to hear the diagnosis, then WAITING to hear the possibilities for treatment or that your loved one will never get any better. Then, WAITING to be transferred from one facility to another, new staff, new physicians and still WAITING to see a sign, any sign, that your loved one is improving. This has been our story. Alyssa is now 41 years old and she has spent many years WAITING for someone to listen because she has something to say. Instead, many brain injured individuals spend wasted years stuck in a wheelchair, wearing diapers and eating pureed food when if they could just put a voice to their disability they would be saying " I want out of this chair! I want to wear my own cool clothes and I want a cheeseburger and fries!!!!!" Amazingly, our story has taken a turn for the better this past year and Alyssa is showing signs of improvement that family, friends and staff are noticing. The "Old Alyssa" is coming back to us and we are looking for ways to assist her in returning to a more productive and fulfilling life. Her memory is better, she's showing more strength in her legs and she has a smile and laughs out loud for all to hear!! Our goal this year is to bring awareness and education to our community and to present the voice of TBI(Traumatic Brain Injury) through people like Alyssa. We are a recently formed 501c3 nonprofit organization. Our mission and our goal is to be able to provide Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy and a Quadriciser Robotic Therapy system to benefit brain injured individuals that would also include those suffering from a stroke, a concussion and PTSD. You don't have to look far or talk to someone for very long before you hear another story of someone that's still WAITING to be heard. We want to help and are passionate in our endeavors. Yes, it's personal but the need is far outreaching and we can no longer look the other way. This is a real need and there are very deserving individuals "out there" still WAITING. Thank you so much . We appreciate your offering of help. Alyssa's Breath.
