About A.B.L.E. - Artists Breaking Limits & Expectations
A.B.L.E. – Artists Breaking Limits & Expectations is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization offering performing arts opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and other cognitive disabilities. We believe everyone is ABLE to connect, ABLE to contribute, and ABLE to create, and that the performing arts provide a unique platform for individuals to develop their own unique voices, and build the confidence and skills needed to share who they are and all that they are ABLE to do. The core of A.B.L.E.’s programming is ensemble-based acting classes which culminate in public performances. A.B.L.E. produces 2 shows each year. We examine canonical classics, empowering actors by giving them ownership over timeless stories, and access to cultural experiences they might typically be denied. A.B.L.E. is drawn to stories that allow the cast to connect with big emotions and themes, and to identify with strong, well-rounded characters. Past performances have ranged from Shakespeare to Dickens to Gilbert & Sullivan. Supported by a team of professional teaching artists and volunteer facilitators, young adults from ages 14-21 meet for weekly rehearsals to participate in a range of theater games and activities aimed at exploring the characters and themes of the play. Along the way, actors build confidence and strengthen lifelong skills including speech and communication, focus, creativity, and teamwork. A.B.L.E. strives to offer programming to participants regardless of their background or financial ability. But the costs of rehearsal space, classroom supplies, costumes, teaching staff, and all the other elements that make a successful production add up. You can help by supporting our program.
