Best Time for Cheap Flights
Knowing when to travel will help you score the best deals on your flights. Since every destination has its own high and low season, getting to know a locale better will help you identify the most affordable time to travel there. Weather plays a big role here. Ski destinations and warm tropical retreats are popular during the winter months. Northern destinations that lack winter activities like skiing or snowboarding are more popular in the summer when their mild temperatures offer an appealing alternative to the sweltering weather in locations like Texas or Georgia. Summer vacation, spring break, and the winter holidays are universally busy — and thus expensive. If you can travel in mid-January to early March or between September and November, you'll generally find the cheapest flights for your trip.
When to Buy Cheap Flights
Many people don't think about the date and time when they're purchasing flights, but shopping during the right period can help you score a great deal on your trip. Many experts say that the lowest airline fares are available on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. Eastern time. Others contend that Wednesday at 1 a.m. is the sweet spot for this purchase. Spend a few weeks testing out these theories on your preferred destination to see when prices drop the most. Fares fluctuate throughout the day as well as throughout the week, so you'll get the best feel for these trends if you check three to four times a day during your search. Prices tend to drop about 47 days out from the travel date. However, they shoot up again two weeks out, so you don't want to wait until the last minute.
The Cheapest Airports
If you have some flexibility with your travel, you can save money by flying into and out of some of the country's cheaper airports. As of 2015, the lowest rates in the United States were found at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. This was followed by Atlanta International, Dallas Love Field, La Guardia, and Chicago-O-Hare. The priciest airports can vary over time, so look for the latest information before you book your travel. Between 2014 and 2015, Cincinatti leaped to the top of the list from a spot as the 77th least expensive pick in the country, and Atlanta jumped to the number two spot from a 2014 ranking at 73rd.
