About Alice to DC! Smithsonian Folklife Festival
Saint Paul-based Circus Juventas has received a prestigious invitation from The Smithsonian Institution to take center stage at the 50th anniversary Smithsonian Folklife Festival, June 29 - July 4 and July 6 - 9, 2017, in Washington, D.C. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the local youth circus school to showcase their program at the nation’s premier arts institution during the height of the tourist season. “Of all the stages Circus Juventas has had the benefit of performing on, including international locations in Italy, Germany and Sweden, this is our greatest honor,” said Daniel W. Butler, Circus Juventas Co-Founder and Executive Director. “To be invited to perform in our Nation’s Capital over the 4th of July for the Smithsonian’s golden anniversary Folklife Festival, focused on circus arts, is truly a once in a life time opportunity. But most importantly, 30 of our young performers will get the experience of a lifetime.” Dan and his wife, Co-Founder and Artistic Director Elizabeth “Betty” Butler, are instrumental pioneers in the expanding world of Cirque du Soleil-style circus arts, and recognized nationally and internationally for their excellence in combining aerial wonder with artistry and storytelling in their productions. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival selected Circus Juventas to be featured during its 50th Anniversary celebration after a two-year research and development vetting process. “Circus Juventas is one of the most prominent community-based youth circus organizations in the United States today and is widely recognized for its creativity and excellence in advancing cirque nouveau training,” said Sabrina Lynn Motley, Director of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, during a press conference held today at the Circus Juventas Big Top. “From its hub in the Twin Cities, they have become a national model of ongoing and evolving efforts to unite community life through values that lie at the very heart of circus arts—cooperation, trust, and mutual respect.” Motley came to Minnesota to offer her support in fundraising for the expenses Circus Juventas will incur as a featured attraction for the 10-day festival.
