Blake Mycoskie and Tom's Shoes
On a trip to Argentina in 2006, Blake Mycoskie befriended a group of children and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created Toms Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes sold with a pair given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by caring TOMS customers.
Why give away shoes when there are so many other necessities? With the leading cause of disease in developing countries being soil-transmitted parasites that penetrate the skin through open sores, Toms Shoes are a much needed preventative resource for impoverished commmunities. Shoes also give children the opportunity to attend school as footwear is a required piece of the uniform, yet is often too expensive for many families to afford.
With two-thirds of our earth’s population lacking footwear, it only seems logical to fill that void. Since the beginning, TOMS has given over 140,000 pairs of shoes to children in need through the One for One model. Because of public support, TOMS plans to give over 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need around the world in 2009 with pair of shoes hand-fitted to a child’s feet by volunteers.
