Tanna Frederick
We had a chance recently to sit down with indie film star Tanna Frederick
to talk to her about her support of Oceana.
GoodSearch: Why do you support Oceana?
Tanna: Growing up in Iowa and being in a landlocked
state, I've always been fascinated by the ocean. Our
oceans control our climate, they affect or economies,
and they feed over one billion people on the earth.
But large scale fisheries are destroying that primary
source of protein for the population - just look at
the recent reports about dangerously high levels of
mercury in fish. I wanted to be involved in an
organization helping to restore our oceans. Oceana is
relatively new global organization that comes up with
concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and
prevent the collapse of our oceans.
GoodSearch: How have you been involved with the
organization?
Tanna: I discovered Oceana four years ago. In
September, I organized my own little Santa Monica
charity called Make A Wave Project - we held a
twenty-four hour surf-a-thon to help raise money for
Oceana. I felt it was important to incorporate a
grassroots approach to raising support and awareness
for the cause. It was great to get all of the surfers
involved because they, of course, care so much about
the ocean and were able to reach out into their
individual networks for this fundraiser. With all of
Oceana and the surfers' support we raised $86,000 -
and happily far exceeded our goal!
GoodSearch: Why do you GoodSearch for Oceana?
Tanna:
Like the Surf-a-thon, GoodSearch provides a wonderful
way to provide grassroots support for Oceana. It's
wonderful to have a simple way for individuals to get
involved - just doing an Internet search can help fund a great
organization!
