Description
Located 40 miles south of Kansas City, Wildwood Outdoor Education Center has provided experiential outdoor learning, team building and leadership skills development to Greater Kansas City’s urban core youth since 1980. Wildwood’s mission is to provide high quality experiential outdoor education, immersing youth in a unique outdoor environment that encourages social interaction and stimulates learning.
Wildwood serves approximately 6,500 youth per year via our youth education programs:
• Summer Learning – Outdoor education targeting youth from Kansas City’s urban core, offered in a residential camp setting. Each year, Summer Learning provides 5-day residential camp experiences to 550-600 at-risk youth from across the region.
• Summer Adventure – A traditional resident camp with an emphasis on outdoor education. 5-day residential camps are available each summer for any youth ages 8-14 years of age. Wildwood offers scholarships to any youth in need in an effort to never turn away any child due to an inability to pay the stated fees.
• Women of Wildwood (WOW) – A variation of the Summer Adventures program, WOW is a one-week residential camp experience reserved for girls only. Campers explore their personal strengthens and develop life-skills while enjoy a comfortable environment with their peers.
• Outdoor School – Outdoor learning programs offered throughout the traditional school year. Since 1970, Outdoor School has provided 2, 3 and 5-day residential camp experiences in the spring and fall to 5th and 6th grade students from schools across the region.
Wildwood operates on 150 acres of natural land near La Cygne, KS. The property was originally owned by the Bob Allen and Majorie Powell Allen family but was donated to Wildwood in 1980 to continue a tradition of serving our region’s at-risk youth.
