The Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) promotes through education an awareness and understanding of the importance of agriculture. As society moves towards urban environments and the general public’s interaction with farms and farming in their own communities dwindles, the need for agriculture education is critical to the future of farming in Virginia and across America. Agriculture provides a wonderful conduit for connecting concepts from science, math, social studies, and language arts to real-world examples. AITC provides teachers with information, materials, and lesson plans to incorporate hands-on activities about agriculture into their assignments so their students have the opportunity to learn about the industry – its history, its present and its potential to impact Virginia in the future. AITC’s programs include training workshops, a semi-annual educational newsletter, and many resources available on the website, www.agintheclass.org.
