The Valley Dance Theatre, a non-profit ballet company, was formed in 1980 by Betsy Hausburg and Penny Tomasello with the goals of providing performance opportunities for talented local dancers and bringing affordable, quality dance performances to the valley. Since then, the company has offered semi-annual performances. The December show is a full length production of Tchaikovsky's holiday classic "The Nutcracker" with the Livermore-Amador Symphony. In May, the company chooses from a variety of classical and contemporary repertoires and collaborations.
Now directed by Betsy Hausburg and Margaret Kenrick, the Valley Dance Theatre company works on a volunteer basis to provide professional-quality theatrical productions. VDT does not participate in recitals or competitions, nor is there a performance or costume fee. VDT performers wear exquisite, professionally designed and sewn costumes owned by the company, purchasing only their shoes and tights.
