Urban Connection – San Antonio is a holistic, faith-based, community development organization dedicated to addressing the root cause of poverty.
Their programs and services include:
KIDS Connection - helping children PLAY with others in a safe environment, LEARN about themselves and the world around them, GROW in character and citizenship, and SERVE our neighbors and the community at large.
Kids Connection, as UC-SA’s longest running “connection,” works throughout the year to engage children ages Kinder to 8th grade through a variety of programs including Urban Connection After School Academy (UCASA), summer Kids Camp, Urban Connection Outdoor Adventures (UCOA), and the Arts Connection. In 2010 alone, more than 150 children participated in Kids Connection programs. January of 2011 not only marked the full move of UCASA to the Frank Garrett Multiservice Center, but also showed an 180% increase in average UCASA daily attendance from Fall 2010. Whether getting literacy help during UCASA, learning about God from volunteer Kids Camp groups, going to a play on a Friday night, hunting with UCOA, or learning new dance steps, children are active and engaged—playing, learning, growing, and serving.
FAMILY RESOURCE Connection - A safe, accepting place where individuals and families discover and use their assets, and access opportunities from a holistic network of support.
The Family Resource Center, led by one full-time employee and 3 regular community volunteers have facilitated for the neighborhood volunteer and community service at various organizations around the community through the Urban Angels Christmas Gift Program, a weekly Zumba class, West End Neighborhood Association, Parenting, Diabetes Awareness classes. In October 2011 they started the Fuerzas Unidas/Joined Forces Cooperatives Food Co-op.
COMMUNITY Connection - Building genuine community through neighborhood fellowship and camaraderie.
Community Connection offers neighbors a chance to fellowship with each other and improve their community through volunteering in Sprouts Community Garden, participating in Weed and Seed, and numerous other community events. October of 2010 saw more than 500 people participate in National Night Out at the West End Park. Another 280 came together for the 2010 Community Thanksgiving Service at the Frank Garrett Multiservice Center. Community Connection also serves as the door through which interested individuals can join UC-SA in serving this community by volunteering with Kids, Family, or Community Connections.
