The Palliative Care Service (PCS) is dedicated to the care and comfort of seriously ill patients and their families. While palliative care is commonly seen as a way to improve the quality of a person's last phase of life, at UCSF Medical Center the service also is available to those suffering from severe conditions such as heart failure, emphysema and chronic liver disease. All patients can request a consultation by the PCS through their doctors or nurses.
At UCSF, the Palliative Care Service includes a two-bed acute in-patient palliative care unit called Comfort Care Suites, which create a more home-like setting for patients and their families.
