Description
Thurgood Marshall Academy is a law-themed public charter high school in Washington, DC’s Ward 8, founded on US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall’s belief that all children have the right to a first-class education. Thurgood Marshall Academy’s mission is to prepare students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society. As the first and only law-related charter school in Washington, DC, our goal is to help students develop their own voice by teaching them the skills lawyers have—the ability to solve complex problems, think critically, and advocate persuasively for themselves and their communities. The school opened in 2001 with 80 ninth-graders and added a grade each year; in 2009–10, Thurgood Marshall Academy served 389 students in grades 9–12.
