Description
The Child School was established in 1973 by its current director Maari de Souza to enable children with learning disabilities to achieve their maximum intellectual and emotional development.
Although of average or above-average intelligence, all our students have disabilities that manifest themselves as disorders in thinking, listening, speaking, reading or spelling, or exhibit perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, developmental aphasia or various other syndromes.
The School fulfills a vital function in the New York City Public School System, serving the needs of children with learning and developmental disabilities throughout the five boroughs. It is chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York to accept youngsters whose needs cannot be satisfied within the public education system.
