Description
The SumoKids program focuses on teaching children the tenets of Sumo wrestling mixed with art and entertainment to help foster growth and development. It is open to elementary and middle schoolchildren, regardless of their race, gender, religion, academic preparation or physical abilities or limitations. The program utilizes a three pronged approach, beginning with the physical fundamentals of Sumo, focusing on how to win with courtesy and lose with dignity, and culminating in how to control their emotions and actions and how to show the same degree of politeness and control in their daily lives. Children who prefer not to participate in the actual wrestling activities have opportunities to participate in other aspects of the program, like creating the performance elements of the pageant that completes each program or acting as referees for the competitions. Participating students become more respectful, develop better study habits, and begin to set realistic goals for their lives.
