Description

The mission of the Starfish Initiative to cultivate promising but economically disadvantaged urban youth into college-educated leaders by providing them with individual mentors, facilitating college preparatory high school careers, offering family-focused support services, and instilling in each student the desire to “give back” to the community in years to come. Our mission is based upon a proven concept that small changes during critical teen years can transform students’ lives and the lives of those around them. A typical Starfish Scholar is the first in his/her family to go to college. Starfish families are 100% low-income and predominantly single parent families. Minority representation is 70%. At Starfish Initiative, we believe that helping children from low-income families earn their high school diploma is not charity. It is a way to ensure the future of our communities.
