For over 50 years, SSF has helped deserving young people who lack financial resources, but demonstrate excellent academic merit and high moral character, attend institutions of higher education. 461 students annually receive Rent-Free Housing Scholarships, valued at $5,000 each year, to live in one of 27 fully-furnished scholarship houses located on or near five Florida campuses: Florida State University and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, University of Florida in Gainesville, Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach and Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers. Residents pay a house bill of approx. $850 per semester which covers food and utilities but pay no rent, thus saving at least $5,000 per year. Residents must follow the house rules concerning the required GPA, no drugs, alcohol or smoking, observe quiet study hours and no overnight guests of the opposite sex. Residents live cooperatively and share the duties of meal planning, shopping, cooking and cleaning chores.
