Snuggle With a Book was formed because: "Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare." Because low income & illiteracy are linked, SWAB exists to serve K-2 classrooms; supporting the teachers/parents by providing new, age-appropriate books & hand-tied fleece blankets. The blankets encourage a positive reading experience by associating comfort with the joy of reading. SWAB targeted 2 low income 1st grade classrooms in the lowest scoring school. We gave each child an age-appropriate new book & a fleece blanket. Our volunteers spent an hour a week reading to these students snuggled with their blanket. The program was such fun & such a success that the school literacy specialist and the principal honored SWAB by inviting us back in the fall! It is our goal and the school's hope that we can raise enough money for 55 students this fall; 55 new books & 55 fleece blankets. One book... one blanket... one child at a time.
