SouthCoast Mentoring Initiatives for Learning Education and Service helps at risk children realize their personal and educational potential through a large scale one-on-one mentoring program.
SMILES is a 501c3 charitable not-for-profit corporation working with school, business and community partners on a clear mission to effect social change by reducing the high drop out rate in New Bedford and Fall River, MA. SMILES will do this one child at a time by pairing identified at-risk youth with positive adult mentors in our school-based program. To reach this goal of impacting the drop out rate, the mentoring initiative focuses on reducing behaviors such as substance abuse, school disciplinary issues and court involvement. SMILES works to increase educational attainment through homework investment time, tutoring and attendance, by providing trusting and caring adult role models (mentors).
