Sleepy Eye Area Historical Society, Sleepy Eye, MN. opened the Depot Museum in 1986. Sleepy Eye is named after Indian Chief "Ish Tak Ha Ba" which means Sleepy Eye because he had one lazy eye he had to open voluntarily. Friend to white people, buried under a 50 foot hard granite monument, the only Obelisk Monument on the National Monument list.
Mission statement: The general purpose of this non-profit corporation shall be the discovery, preservation and dissemination of historical knowledge about the City of Sleepy Eye, County of Brown, as it relates of the City of Sleepy Eye.
The three Sleepy Eye schools are an important part of the Depot Museum.
General operating funds are the biggest problem. City of Sleepy Eye gives $3,000 and Brown County, $1,500 annualy. The remainder is made by memorials, donations, Grants, Gift Shop, selling Hardee coupons and many benefits.
