SILOAM is a non-profit agency that provides wellness support to people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Programs include seaside retreats, individual counseling and spiritual direction, reiki, massage, reflexology, yoga, tai-chi, and Body/Mind/Spirit integration activities. A recent study at the Harvard Medical School confirmed that important biological markers such as blood pressure and heart rate are dramatically improved by yoga, meditation and other body/mind/spirit techniques. Although new medications, thankfully, allow people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS to live longer lives, the medications themselves bring challenges to the quality of life, and patients may still be subject to infections and side effects. By providing wellness support, SILOAM (named after a pool in Israel said to have healing properties) helps clients improve their quality of life and offers them a renewed sense of joy and hope.
