Ships of Discovery is a non-profit, publicly-funded, archaeological research and educational organization initally created to investigate the ships used by Spanish and Portuguese navigators during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It's mandate has expanded to include the study of ships engagaed in exploration in the 17th and 18th centuries, 19th cenutury slave ships and US Navy ships, as well as historic sites on land.
The institute fields surveys and excavations in the U.S. and various Latin American and Caribbean countries, conducts conservation and analysis of artifacts, and promotes education and better understanding of the past through scientific articles, popular books and lectures, and the design and fabrication of museum exhibits.
