Since Sheltering Arms was founded in Atlanta in 1888, its mission has been to provide nurturing early childhood education to all young children, regardless of income, and to build empowered families and communities to support them. Through community support, the agency has grown into a nationally recognized model for quality early childhood education, and has expanded its child care and family support services to 16 neighborhood centers serving 4,000 children in 7 metro Atlanta counties. Sheltering Arms is widely respected for its success in preparing children for school. Each year, on average more than 90% of the children attending Sheltering Arms meet or exceed developmental milestones and kindergarten readiness requirements, with the rest being children new to the program or children referred for special services to address developmental delays.
