Description
Settlement Music School is the largest community-based school of the arts in the United States, having served tens of thousands of students since its inception in 1908. Settlement is dedicated to a mission of service and belief that people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and financial means deserve and will benefit from high quality programs in music and dance. With six branches in South, West and Northeast Philadelphia, Germantown, Willow Grove and Camden, NJ, the School offers individual instruction in more than 20 instruments, as well as group classes, choirs, chamber music ensembles, jazz ensembles, orchestras, music therapy, ballet and creative movement and more. Settlement awards an unprecedented $2 million a year in financial aid and is the largest employer of musicians in the region. Its nationally recognized arts-based, pre-school program called Kaleidoscope, for lower income families, has made its students three times more prepared for kindergarten than their peers in a non arts-based curriculum. There is at least one Settlement graduate in every major symphony in the United States. Albert Einstein, a member of the School's early advisory board, also played violin in a chamber music ensemble at Settlement Music School each week.
