SAFE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to developing a comprehensive, community-based resolution to the euthanasia of adoptable companion animals. Understanding the euthanasia problem is the first step toward obtaining this goal. The traditional response of "spay or neuter your pet" fails to address the realities of how animals end up in shelters in the first place.
One of the most important things we do is to rescue animals for soldiers from Ft. Huachuca, who have been deployed to Iraq, and Afganistan. We are the only shelter doing that, at the moment. If we did not bring these animals in (and there are WAY too many of them), they are euthanized (put down) within a day or two of rescue. Most of the soldier's dogs are well behaved, well trained and as traumatized as the soldiers who have to leave them behind.
