The Roots of Music is a music education program for middle-school students in New Orleans. The ojectives are as follows: to keep children off the street, to build a nationally recognized middle school marching band (of which there are few post-Katrina,) to bring children from different parts of the city together, to support economic developments in the city of New Orleans, and to develop talent for the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. We are measuring our success by the number of students enrolled, the program's retention rates, total hours of instruction, band participation, outreach and competition attendance, the number of graduating students enrolled in continuing music education programs, and GPAs. There are currently 60 middle students learning the rudiments of marching band music in weekly rehearsals;we will grow to 200 students total. The program is free for all students.
