Rochester Roots, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 grassroots organization which is committed to the creation of a locally based, sustainable food system that is nutritionally, ecologically, and economically sound. We fulfil our mission through education, advocacy and community development.
Our major focus is on working with students in low-income neighborhoods, in three Rochester NY city schools. We work with teachers, students, parents, elders, neighbors and community partners to transform underutilized schoolyards into urban gardens.
As we teach participants to grow organic vegetables and herbs, we are also developing self-reliance; we encourage diversity in the vegetable world by growing heirloom varities of vegetables; we teach entrepreneurial skills through a farm market component, and finally we develop garden-based products that are sold to the public.
