Raising A Reader is an innovative early literacy and parent involvement national non-profit with a mission to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding and early literacy skills critical for school success by engaging parents in a routine of daily “book cuddling” with their children from birth to age five. It is operated through preschools, home visiting programs, adult education centers, family childcare homes—any place where parents and children routinely gather. Through initial training and ongoing support, parents—even those with limited English proficiency or low literacy skills—learn how to engage their children in storytelling with picture books that are rotated home each week. Through the book-sharing experience, children develop a love of books and parents feel proud to be contributing to their child’s development and school readiness. Raising A Reader also works in partnership with the public library, setting up families for a lifetime of book enjoyment.
