PWP™ engages persons with developmental disabilities to voluntarily participate in routine medical, dental and self-care procedures, while educating caregivers and providers on promoting systems change in administering care with dignity and respect. The goals are to teach:
1. children and adults how to practice routine medical, dental and personal procedures, overcome their fears, participate in their routine procedures, and benefit from a healthy lifestyle.
2. caregivers, family members, and paraprofessionals appropriate coaching and support techniques as they support the individual in the midst of the process and continue the process without PWP™ support.
3. providers the benefits of practice, preparing them to detect fearful moments, respond with respect, invite the individuals to participate in the process, and bring systems change to the current policy of restraint and sedation.
