The Philadelphia Zoo, America's first zoo, was founded in 1859 and opened to the public in 1874. The Zoo is dedicated to its mission of conservation, science, education and recreation. The core purpose of the Philadelphia Zoo is to advance discovery, understanding and stewardship of the natural world through compelling exhibition and interpretation of living animals and plants.
