Description
The Self-advocacy movement for people with
disabilities in Nebraska has a long History. The first
self-advocacy chapter began in Omaha in 1975 under the
sponsorship of the Greater Omaha Association for
Retarded Citizens. Subsequently, other local
self-advocacy chapters were established and their
leaders came together in 1978 to establish a statewide
organization, People First of Nebraska(PFN). From 1978
to 1985, the work of People First of Nebraska was
supported entirely by volunteers. Since 1978, People
First has planned and organized an annual statewide
self-advocacy convention which is held in October.
In 1985, People First of Nebraska, Inc. became
incorporated as a nonprofit corporation with a mission
to teach people with disabilities how to speak out for
themselves and make them aware of their rights and
responsibilites as citizens.
