Description
The Parkinson’s Project was established to build a prototype assisted living residence for people with Parkinson’s disease. PD is a degenerative neurobehavioral disorder affecting the motor skills, speech and cognitive abilities of 1.5 million Americans. It usually strikes people in their 60s, but young onset PD can hit people in their 20s. There is no cure and the current treatments aren’t very effective and only for limited time spans.
PD symptoms include tremors, shuffling, freezing of movements, masking of facial expressions, speech and sleep problems, depression, anxiety, psychosis and dementia. Symptoms change by the hour; even medication timing can mean the difference between a day well lived or a day that drags by, immobile and bedridden. Typical assisted living institutions prevent people with PD to thrive. Our model assisted living residence will be home-like, flexible, supportive and resident-centered with a care plan specifically intended for PD.
