Description
Our Community Place is a grassroots nonprofit organization in Harrisonburg, VA. It began with a local restaurant-owner deciding to close his business on Mondays to offer a free meal to "anyone in the world". The idea behind this Free Food For All Soup Kitchen was for it to be a cooperative meal where everyone volunteered to help prep, eat, and clean up. It also happened to be specifically helpful for the many homeless in town. In 1999 OCP incorporated and became a 501(c)(3) organization. After two years of intensive fundraising they were able to buy an old Salvation Army building and land and have been renovating ever since. The building recently received its occupancy permit in August 2008 and is now open to the public. It provides a refuge to those with nowhere to go during the day, free meals, education, crafts, games, counseling, Bible studies, and much more.
