Description
OPLP’s mission is to increase the literacy rate of students in Oakland by providing opportunities for collaboration between principals, teachers, and parents in order to encourage children to become lifelong readers. OPLP was established in 1999 by former Senator Don Perata, in collaboration with the OUSD and the Oakland community, who were all deeply concerned with the crisis of Oakland’s literacy rates and wished to move literacy to the forefront of the city’s agenda. Family Reading Night (FRN) Events helped to establish a forum in which the community and school staff could engage both parents and children in the reading process and support them through the various stages of reading development. Since its inception, OPLP has served 70,000 OUSD students and families and distributed over 60,000 books to students.
