Since 1989, NorthWoods Stewardship Center has been Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom’s environmental learning center whose mission is to connect human and natural communities through education and action. The Center strives to serve residents of northeast Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom-a three county, rural region characterized in part by the lowest economic and educational levels in the state and the second lowest in New England. The Kingdom is one of five federally designated poverty regions (REAP Zones) in the country. NorthWoods provides a unique blend of programs and services to one of the most underserved populations in New England. The Center employs a multidisciplinary approach in carrying out its mission and reaching its audiences through five interrelated program areas: conservation science, land management, outdoor recreation, conservation service and a diverse education program for youth and adults.
