Outward Bound is an educational organization founded in 1941 by Kurt Hahn, a well-known European educator. The term “Outward Bound” is nautical in origin and describes the moment a ship leaves the safety of the harbor and its crew commits itself to the challenges of an ocean journey. Likewise, Outward Bound programs encourage participants to leave the safety of their everyday experiences and challenge themselves in new ways. There are more than 40 Outward Bound schools and centers worldwide, each meeting the specific needs of their respective communities. In the United States, Outward Bound has five program areas that change lives, build teams and transform schools. Currently there are more than 150 U.S. public schools based on the Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound educational approach—a proven national design that leads to high levels of student achievement and engagement.
