Description
Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven (NHS) is a nonprofit, community-based organization that has been serving the housing and homeownership needs of residents of New Haven since 1979. NHS’ mission is to stabilize and revitalize the neighborhoods it serves, and develop affordable housing for low- and moderate-income (LMI) families. Over the past 28 years, Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven has developed 382 affordable housing units. In this way, NHS has helped 214 LMI New Haven residents to become first-time homeowners in new or rehabilitated homes, making NHS the largest non-profit homeownership development program in New Haven. The New Haven HomeOwnership Center (HOC), a subsidiary of NHS, was incorporated in 2001 to provide a complete range of homebuyer counseling and education services LMI families. In incorporating the HOC, NHS recognized that a home is an asset that is only as valuable as the ability of its owner to retain it.
