Description
Located 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast on Nantucket Island, the MMA honors America's first professional woman astronomer who believed that students learned best by doing real research projects. The MMA is dedicated to furthering science education, encouraging women in science, and serving as a science resource for Nantucket. Our mission is to increase knowledge and public awareness of the universe and the natural world through programs of scientific research and education.
The MMA celebrates the legacy of Nantucket astronomer, librarian, and educator Maria Mitchell by promoting intellectual curiosity, respect for and love of nature, learning by doing, and the ideal of individualism.
In order to complete its misson, the MMA holds workshops, classes, nature walks, and observatory open nights for children and adults both in the summer and the off-season and works with local schools and other organizations.
