Description
The Musk Ox Development Corporation (MODC) is a private non-profit 501 (C)(3)
that is home to a unique domestication project that began with one man’s vision to provide an economic supplement to remote Alaskan Natives. The goal of the project was to use qiviut, the underhair of the musk ox, as the raw fiber material for a cottage handknitting industry to provide rural Alaskan residents, with the opportunity to earn cash without interfering with their traditional lifestyles. In the 1940’s and 50’s the villages of coastal Alaska were being compared to some of the most impoverished in the world. Where others saw two hopeless situations, John Teal, the founder of the Musk Ox Development Corporation, eyes sparkled and a vision was born.
