The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami was founded in January 1981, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution and established through an ordinance of the City of North Miami. In 1993, MOCA received a $2.5 million federal grant to build a new 23,000 square foot facility. MOCA is led by the innovative vision of Director/Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater (a celebrated art historian) and an active board, chaired by renowned collector, Irma Braman. Additionally, MOCA is planning a major expansion of its North Miami facility. In April 2007, the museum unveiled the architectural concept plan that will triple its current exhibition space in North Miami, provide a gallery for the permanent collection, an education wing, and various multi-purpose spaces.
