Description
Led by Principal John Curry, its co-founder, serves a mostly black and latino student body in grades 6-8. John and his dedicated faculty and staff, run the school almost like a charter program. There is differentiated reading instruction, an emphasis on community service and personal responsibility for making the positive change. There is a cross country program, coached by two caring math teachers, which participates in all of the NY Road Runner races and programs throughout the year. Extra:Newspaper, Violin, Knitting, Math club. CAS is in a building with several other schools, including a pre-K, so it gets pretty crowded sometimes, and there are only 2 elevators for all 3 or 4 schools. There was a problem with some bullying, but the leadership sought out support of CORE to make this a school-wide initiative. CAS is a public school that needs our support.
