From playful river otters to Gilded Age opulence, this 100-acre treasure in Richmond, Virginia has something for everyone. Maymont’s grounds feature an intact late-Victorian country estate including the luxurious Maymont House Museum, original outbuildings and beautiful Italian and Japanese gardens. A fascinating new domestic service exhibit recently opened in the basement of the museum. The Robins Nature & Visitor Center includes a 20-foot waterfall, giant aquariums and interactive galleries. A period Carriage Collection adds historical interest, while Native Virginia Wildlife Exhibits, a Children’s Farm and the Nature Center are home to 700 animals. Carriage, tram and hay wagon rides are offered. Food is available. The property is operated by the private, non-profit Maymont Foundation and has an annual budget of $3.3 million.
