Description
Since 1992, Los Angeles Team Mentoring (LATM) has been providing team based mentoring to urban middle schools in some of the most underserved areas of LA. LATM utilizes teachers, community volunteers, college students and teenagers as mentors to serve at-risk youth in after school hours. This team approach leverages the strength of traditional one-on-one mentoring with the power of group dynamics. Each team of mentors works with a group of 12-15 students, using an activity-based curriculum that focuses on leadership development, team building and community service. The curriculum also addresses decision-making, conflict resolution, cultural diversity, peer and adult relationships, and goal setting. Sessions are 2 hours in length and are held 4 times a month, and provide a safe space for our youth to participate in constructive activities and interact with positive role models. LATM operates at 11 middle schools and serves over 1,200 youth with the support of 300 volunteer mentors.
