Description
The Literacy Volunteers of Illinois is a statewide organization committed to developing and supporting volunteer literacy programs that help families, adults and out-of-school teens increase their literacy skills. LVI programs are conducted on behalf of volunteers, students and staff in five general areas – training and referral, AmeriCorps programming, correctional education, public information and advocacy, and new reader leadership. Our Jump Start program, which serves incarcerated youth, age 16 and over, is one of the few of its kind in the country. The program, which focuses on recruiting retirees to serve as volunteers tutors and mentors to the youth, has been featured as a "Best Practice" at three national conferences.
