Description
Literacy Chicago (LC), the largest private literacy program in Illinois, is dedicated to improving the lives of Chicago area adults by providing a variety of classes and tutoring in reading, everyday math, grammar, and more. Programs and services range from free classes in reading and everyday math to GED preparation. One-on-one and small-group tutoring in Adult Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language comprise a core part of Literacy Chicago’s mission--about 1,500 adult students benefited from these services last year. LC also runs Community Adult Learning Centers, which bring these free programs into interested communities. Students span the spectrum in age, ethnic background and socioeconomic status, and about 50% read at or below the 4th-grade level upon enrollment. Through their work at LC, adult learners achieve greater self-sufficiency and self-esteem by improving their basic education, employability and life skills, including reading, writing, and English-language use.
