Description
Life Pieces to Masterpieces is an outgrowth of a community arts initiative that began in the Lincoln Heights Housing Community in the summer of 1996. Larry Quick, a professional artist, designed and implemented the visual arts portion of the initiative; and in 1997 he invited his apprentices from the summer program to participate in his senior thesis exhibit at the Corcoran. In the weeks following the exhibit, the need to form an actual organization became clear. Drawing from the style of painting used with the boys -- painting and cutting canvases into pieces and then sewing the pieces onto a canvas background to create a masterpiece -- the apprentices and Mr. Quick named the organization Life Pieces to Masterpieces (LPTM). LPTM has expanded its arts mission to include an extensive academic focus. LPTM was awarded the Year 2000 Mayor's Art Award for outstanding contribution to Arts in Education.
