Description

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation [JDRF] is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 [juvenile] diabetes research worldwide. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has provided more than $1.16 billion in direct funding for diabetes research. Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system. There are two major types of diabetes. Type 1 [juvenile] diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing Insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that prevents people from using insulin, still produced in the body, effectively. Type 1 usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, and lasts a lifetime. Multiple, daily injections of insulin or a continuous infusion through an insulin pump, ensures only survival. Insulin is not a cure, nor does it prevent the eventual and devastating complications of the disease.
