The Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School, established in 1948, is the oldest cooperative nursery school in the state of Michigan. The mission of the school, located in Detroit, is to provide high-quality, affordable, early childhood education in a cooperative setting where the parents run the school and have close involvement with the teacher and the classroom experience. The school recognizes that children between the ages of 2 ½ and 5 learn through play and thrive in an environment that allows them to make their own choices. The school offers a play-oriented, structured program designed to foster independence, self-esteem and internal control. The goal is to prepare the students to enter kindergarten with the skills to handle a wide variety of academic, social and interpersonal situations.
